6 Easy Steps To A More Sustainable Beauty Regimen
Building an eco-friendly beauty routine doesn’t have to be taxing or tiresome. Switch to these six sustainable swaps and both your hair and the planet will thank you
If you’re here, chances are you’re already making strides to live more sustainably. Maybe you shop locally, walk to work or even compost your food waste. And there are plenty of ways to feel and look good while lowering the impact on the planet, too, so say hello to six easy ways to give your beauty regimen an ‘ec-over’...
1. Buy products housed in eco-friendly packaging
We can all play our part in the journey to reduce plastic usage by supporting brands that champion eco-friendly packaging, as it has much less impact on the planet. For us, well, we’re big on the recycled stuff. Our bottles are made from 100% PCR plastic, otherwise known as Post-Consumer Recycled plastic, which means it's crafted from recycled materials. The fact our packaging has had a previous life is the reason why our bottles aren’t see-through, but we think that’s all part of our charm. We are also committing that, by 2030, 100% of our product and packaging portfolio will allow for people-and-planet friendly disposal, with all packaging made with 100% recycled materials.
2. Adopt our water mantra
Hands up if you like a long, hot, sudsy shower? You’re not alone, us too. But our top tip? Live by the mantra, ‘water is for one thing and one thing only: rinsing’. For anything else (with the exception of saturating your hair with water before you use shampoo, of course) turn the tap off and lather up without that H2O. Shaving your legs, buffing in a body scrub or brushing through conditioner can all be done with the power shower firmly switched off.
3. Ensure you shop from cruelty-free and vegan brands
For us, a huge part of creating a more sustainable regimen is reducing the impact we have on the planet at every level, and that means caring for all the creatures who share it with us. We don’t test on animals and we don’t use animal-based ingredients in our products. How does going vegan with your beauty routine help? Well, for one, the process of raising and processing animals for ingredients (such as lanolin) takes its toll on the environment so making the switch, even for just a few products, instantly reduces your impact.
4. Think about biodegradability
When a product is biodegradable, all of its ingredients can be broken down naturally – which means biodegradability is hugely important to the overall health of our planet. At Love Beauty and Planet, all of our shampoos, conditioners, and body washes have recently been reformulated to be 100% biodegradable. So the next time you rinse out our Love Beauty & Planet Murumuru Butter & Rose Blooming Color Shampoo you’ll know the environment won’t have to work too hard to break it down. And we don’t mean to brag, but we’re the first mass beauty brand to make a move like this!
5. Buy from brands that give back
It’s not only up to you to play a part, it’s important brands use their power and do well by the planet. Since launching, here at Love Beauty and Planet we have taken this very seriously. Our carbon tax program is one way we hold ourselves accountable – taxing ourselves $40 per carbon ton emitted from our production through to distribution to our customers. We’ve used the fund this year to create The Love Beauty and Planet Project, an initiative which is offering up to $100,000 to projects designed to improve the health of our planet.
6 Reuse or recycle your packaging
That empty candle votive would make a great make-up brush pot, wouldn’t it? What about that paper grocery bag – could that be upcycled into gift wrap? Before you toss something away, ask yourself how you could reuse it instead. And if you can’t reuse it? Well, recycle it. Almost everything we at Love Beauty and Planet produce can be recycled and given a new lease of life. It’s part of our pledge to do #SmallActsOfLove for the planet.
