Adopting A Vegan Beauty Routine: Where To Begin
Want to care for your skin, hair and the planet, all at the same time? It’s possible. Here, we break it down in our guide to vegan beauty
When it comes to beauty buzzwords, vegan beauty has been gaining serious traction, but what does that term really mean? Simply, ‘vegan beauty’ just means using products – from what we comb through our hair to what we lather on our skin – that contain no animal products. It’s often confused with ‘cruelty-free’, which refers to products that have not been tested on animals and don’t use ingredients that have been, either.
Both vegan and cruelty-free beauty are important to us at Love Beauty and Planet. Our ethos is that beauty should never be at the expense of the world around us, and this includes animals. We firmly believe that beauty products can be developed using non-animal approaches, as well as being cruelty-free. It’s something we have focused on from the very beginning, so whichever product you choose to enjoy, you can rest assured it has never been tested on animals and that all Love Beauty and Planet products are vegan.
Want to know more? Here’s our guide to adopting a vegan beauty routine that works for you…
Step 1: Understanding the cruelty-free approach
One of the best ways to really understand what you’re putting on your skin and into your hair is by familiarizing yourself with what’s inside each product. Over 30 years ago, our parent company Unilever made a long-term commitment to developing non-animal, cruelty-free approaches, a commitment that means we can ensure all of our products at Love Beauty and Planet (along with many other brands and products in the Unilever family) are completely kind to animals. It means our products aren’t tested on animals and our suppliers aren’t testing on them either.
Step 2: Get to know ingredients
For vegan-beauty newbies, it can be difficult to understand which products and ingredients are, in fact, not derived from animals – or tested on them. But we’ll help you learn what to look for. Ingredients like beeswax, lanolin, gelatin and keratin, for example, are all animal byproducts. We work to find plant-based alternatives without compromising on the efficacy our products deliver. In fact, because vegan-beauty products are usually formulated from such high-quality naturally derived ingredients, plant actives and essential oils, they are powerhouses in their own right. Such as the incredibly sumptuous Love Beauty and Planet’s Argan Oil & Lavender Body Lotion. This gentle lotion, infused with Moroccan argan oil, leaves skin seriously hydrated, and smells like a dream, thanks to delicate lavender. Another product we love, thanks to its naturally derived ingredients, is Love Beauty and Planet’s Sulfate-Free Murumuru Butter & Rose Shampoo. This shampoo helps protect and keep colored hair vibrant thanks to naturally derived murumuru butter, an Amazonian super moisturizer, along with ethically sourced Bulgarian rose.
Step 3: Choose products with heart
When you choose to buy products that focus on caring for the environment and animals as well as your own hair and skin, you’ll find other benefits, too. Companies who care often think more carefully about other things, too, like environmentally friendly packaging. It’s a big focus for us, since around 120 billion units of packaging are produced every single year by the global cosmetics industry. Our bottles are thoughtfully made with 100% post-consumer recycled plastic that’s also recyclable. By doing this since our first year, it meant we kept approximately 500 tons of plastic from going into landfills. As a company, Love Beauty and Planet is dedicated to waste reduction and we really hope you’ll support us on that mission. Because when you shop with companies who think this way, you can sleep easy, knowing your actions are helping make the world a cleaner, greener and more beautiful place.
