What Does Vegan Shampoo Mean

What is Vegan? What is Vegan Shampoo?

What does it mean to be a vegan, and what is vegan shampoo good for? You could be an environmental vegan, an ethical vegan, a dietary vegan or even a beauty vegan. Generally, being vegan means abstaining from the use of animal-related products for a variety of reasons. You could also think of vegan as plant-based. Veganism can be a practice as well as a lifestyle. Vegan shampoo follows the same guidelines, meaning a shampoo is considered vegan if it does not contain any ingredient derived from animals and no animal testing was done in relation to its production.

More beauty and hair brands are going vegan and promoting veganism. But, be sure to check for certification and ensure you are looking at the ingredients on the products you are using. Love Beauty and Planet is cruelty free and vegan, and we don’t test on animals. Each of our products has been independently vegan certified by PETA.

Benefits of Vegan Shampoo

Not all shampoos are created equally. Here are some of the benefits of vegan shampoo that shed more light into why going vegan in your haircare routine can be a great option:

1. No nasties:

Vegan shampoo typically has less harsh ingredients and a more robust list of “free-froms”. For example, our Love Beauty and Planet shampoo collection is sulfate-free and free of manmade chemicals like parabens, silicones and phthalates that could further damage dyed or color-treated hair.

2. Naturally derived ingredients:

Vegan shampoo is more likely to use ingredients that are naturally derived, like essential oils and butter extracts. Love Beauty and Planet uses Coconut Oil, meaning we choose plant actives to work in harmony with our vegan certified ingredients in our products.

3. Plant-based:

Vegan shampoo doesn’t use ingredients derived from animal byproducts. This includes ingredients like beeswax, lanolin, gelatin and keratin. This means that there are more plant-based ingredients in vegan shampoos, which is often better when treating and maintaining your natural hair.

4. Ethical practice:

Vegan shampoo is ethical and kind to the planet. Vegan shampoo is important because it ensures that no animals were harmed in producing the shampoo. Brands that choose to go vegan in their products also tend to choose more environmentally friendly alternatives in its packaging too.

5. Vegan shampoo promotes growth.

It’s not just about being green, but also being a great shampoo that increases hair follicles with essential oils, minerals and naturally derived ingredients.

Is Vegan Shampoo Better than Traditional Shampoos?

Now that you know what is vegan shampoo, upgrading from your traditional branded shampoo to a vegan shampoo can have many perks. Vegan shampoos are effective, even though they might skip on certain ingredients. It’s quality over quantity for hair health — as well as peace of mind for your mind and the planet.

For example, our sulfate free coconut oil & ylang ylang shampoo is 93% naturally derived, vegan and certified cruelty-free. It ethically helps repair hair with coconut oil, prevents split ends while gently removing dirt and realigns strands. Vegan shampoo can be the a great nourishing alternative for everyone. And yes, your hair can be “vegan,” too.
